Pretty sure one did. Came from Arizona. Lost everywhere except The Deep South.

Goldwater was half-Jewish, ethnically, but he wasn't brought up in the faith and he attended Episcopalian church.

Sure, the party could nominate a Jewish candidate, so long as they didn't place too much emphasis on "the wall of separation between church and state," which is not a very popular phrase with the right.
