Yeah, he wasn't too good in 1952. Kefauver appears to have been a better influence on him in 1956, though.
Kefauver was definitely better, especially on civil rights.  I would not have minded him as President.

"Protectionism is good" had been around for centuries before either Adlai Stevenson stepped out onto the national stage. 
What I meant is that it was discredited by WWII and was confined to the anti-intellectual extremes of both parties until 2016.
No one has really called for strict protectionism--just better free trade deals.
