This one has to be close to the top, if not on the top, as a case of getting elected to high office with a fraudulent identity. Wow.

As I started to read the article, I asked the question of course as to where he got his money, given that where he claimed he got it, along with almost every other claim that he made, was a lie. But then the stolen checkbook down in Brazil for which charges are pending, and the heist of the money from the pseudo charitable event, and it becomes obvious. He's most likely going to be charged soon with criminal fraud and will be forced to resign is my guess.

Just why none of this has come out before is quite amazing. I guess nobody thought he was worth the time to do any opposition research on him. Given that he got elected he obviously has talent as a con artist.

And yes, his laugh is a bit off putting to me, and he comes across as anything but a policy wonk, but he does have talent in his chosen profession.

Why would Santos resign?  …  The Republican playbook is just keep doubling and tripling down, never apologize, whine about liberal media lies, and carry on like nothing happened.

The you have enemies quote used to defend the fake "fairy" by the presumably real lawyer (citation needed), is also fake. It is also interesting to find out that out that a long shot candidate can get about 25K from Putin via a conduit by becoming his butt boy as it were. The press really did drop the ball on this guy didn't they?

PS: The author of the fake Churchill quote is indeed a lawyer - a warrior against woke criminal defense lawyer whose bio is almost as colorful as his client's. https://jmurray-law.com/ Yes, Santos picked the right specialty (criminal rather than defamation), even if not necessarily the right lawyer (with his Guiliani-like vibe).

https://www.thebulwark.com/george-santos-problems-are-just-getting-started/

“Santos ran a failed campaign in 2020, during which he filed a financial disclosure declaring virtually no assets and a salary of $55,000. In his 2022 campaign, his disclosure claimed a $750,000 salary and several million in assets, including an apartment in Brazil valued at nearly $1million.

‘These massive jumps in income and assets have not been explained or documented. In both financial disclosures, Santos signed statements that his claims were ‘true, complete, and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.’ ”

The NYT remains on the Santos case like a bloodhound, and today it is about the conversion of campaign funds to pay personal expenses, including rent for the house Santos was really living in, as opposed to pretending to live in, that was listed as for campaign staff, but only he and his husband where sighted there.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/29/nyregion/george-santos-campaign-finance.html

It's only a matter of time, as we all await the disclosure of where the 750K came from.

I agree. How is it that the Nassau GOP decided that this guy was their best option and let him go unopposed in the primary?

My speculation is that the GOP had become acclimated to losing in Nassau County, the seat that was drawn very late in the day was unexpectedly Pub (maps of both parties did not have such a seat), and the GOP romp was not anticipated until the backs on the machines were read after 9 pm on election night.

In other news, it appears that his campaign page about himself has not been updated. I guess he has been too busy.

Absolutely preposterous he is going to be allowed to take his seat. There are worse things you can do and worse people you can be, but this is a complete affront to the basic requirements for getting a job.  You just can’t have a false identity.

Nope. You will need to wait for a felony conviction of the man, and then a two thirds vote to expel if he does not resign, which he won't, unless it is part of a plea bargain. That is my expectation.

"The Supreme Court ruled in 1969 that a person who met the constitutional requirements for office in the House of Representatives could not be refused a seat once elected. In that case, Powell v. McCormack, the court suggested that a permissible remedy for the House, should it try to exclude one of its duly elected members, would be a vote to expel the lawmaker once he or she was seated.

"Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution states that “Each house may determine the rules of its proceedings, punish its members for disorderly behavior, and, with the concurrence of two-thirds, expel a member.”

'While the Constitution grants the House broad authority to cast out one of its own, there has long been internal debate over whether lawmakers can be expelled for behavior from before they took office.

'Some Republicans, for example, argued that Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, should not have been stripped of her committees for her social media posts from before she was elected. In the posts, she endorsed executing top Democrats, suggested that a number of school shootings were secretly perpetrated by government actors, and repeatedly trafficked in antisemitic and Islamophobic conspiracy theories."

The date Santos resigns/is removed has a lot to do with how long it takes to find out where he got that 700K from. He won't be serving out his term.
