I think it's plausible but may be too optimistic.
Sane Republicans like Kristol are still under the illusion that a lot of republicans are really like them, when there is massive evidence to the contrary.

I think it's more accurate to describe it as a delusion rather than an illusion at this point, but totally agreed.
