Nope, he’s an awful candidate who is literally only running to annoy the state party.

Shri Thanedar is a lying fraud (who's actually being sued for fraud). The only reason he's leading right now is because he's been saturating the airwaves, and he's only saturating the airwaves because he has so much goddamn money.

The man holds no true political positions according to this in-depth look at him: https://theintercept.com/2018/04/06/shri-thanedar-michigan-millionaire-bernie-sanders-republican/

And is willing to say anything to anyone: https://theintercept.com/2018/03/27/michigan-governor-race-shri-thanedar/

(I know it's The Intercept, I'm not a huge fan of Greenwald either, but this is good journalism)

He claims to be the most progressive candidate but denigrates them when talking to advisors. He's just a billionaire who's looking for the easiest way to get his name in the papers and the state funded security detail and mansion so he can schmooze with other rich powerful people. He would be a disaster as governor and after eight years of the poisoner Rick Snyder in office Michiganders need someone who actually cares about the state, which still has real problems. Thanedar is only in it for himself.

I hate him and would not vote for him.

IIRC he's not leading right now, fortunately.

He lead the last poll, but has been polling in the 20’s all year with Whitmer not too comfortably ahead.

All of the Sanders alumni involved in this race back Abdul and absolutely despise Thanedar, FTR. Thanedar is doing so well because he's taking the Tom Wolf '14 strategy of using their personal wealth to absolute flood the airwaves well before any of their opponents do.

In that case, I guess I can't really blame them for Thaneder, my bad.

The Illinois Democratic party nominated some corrupt billionaire for governor, so I'm sure Michigan is perfectly capable of nominating someone terrible too.

Thandear is horrible in the worst sort of way - an ideological chameleon who's trying to buy an election. But I find it a little disturbing how much overlap there is in the "JB's the nominee; you've got to support him" crowd with the "Thanedar is terrible; I'll never support him" crowd, specifically in media and the twittersphere. The two seem almost identical to me. Plus, when you consider opponents, Bruce Rauner is an infinitely better choice than Schutte...
That's because Thanedar could take the nomination away from their anointed neoliberal, Gretchen Whitmer (who, I will admit, I like much more than Pritzker).

You...err...know that Whitmer isn't a neoliberal by any remote stretch of the imagination, right?  Calling her a neoliberal makes about as much sense as calling Bob Casey "Santorum 2.0" due to his views on abortion or calling Paul Ryan's tax bill "fiscally conservative" just because it included tax cuts.  Come to think of it, I suspect Pritzker isn't really one either (although IDK for sure in his case).  Neoliberal doesn't mean "any person who either has a lot of money and/or is supported by the Democratic establishment."

Yeah, yeah, I know.

Sorry if I got a little ornery btw; the misuse of that term is fast becoming a pet peeve of mine Tongue

You're correct that it doesn't mean that, but it doesn't mean what you think it means either.

Okay, I’ll bite.  What do you think I think it means?

He's leading 29-26 over Whitmer in a new poll. I can't link it now, but search it on twitter.

I would certainly support Gretchen Whitmer here, but Abdul runs a fine campaign and it is a good signal that a Muslim American at 33 can do so. Maybe Whitmer can tap him for lt. gov?

Whitmer will likely pick an African-American man for Lt. Governor, but I agree that El-Sayed has run a solid campaign and could have a real future in Michigan politics once he gets his residency issues sorted out.
