Smith.
Chase and Barry "Let's nuke Vietnam" Goldwater will be much, much possibly slightly worse than LBJ.

Though why you would vote for either when there's a far better option is beyond me.

Anyways, Morse wasn't a segregationist that I know of, and Fulbright was many things besides that. You could do far worse.
Wayne Morse wasn't a segregationist, but he did vote against the 1957 Civil Rights Act.  So did JFK.

From the left or from the right, though?

Pro-Medicare/Medicaid/Civil Rights.

Margaret Chase Smith supported all of these things.  She also co-sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment in the 40s.  She championed legislation that gave women permanent status in the military.  She also made sure that the Civil Rights act of 1964 included "sex" as a protected category despite the fact that some democratic senators wished to get rid of it.  They thought discrimination against women didn't matter.  Smith rightly recognized that it did!

She was pretty much a massive civil rights FF.  So yeah.

Smith '64!

She's also a Vietnam hawk.  Yarborough/Morse!

The fact that people are actually getting upset over a a completely fictional alternate history legitimately damages my faith in humanity.

Come on guys, you don't want the first Democratic President since FDR to be a more conservative than IRL version of Lyndon Johnson do you?

Question for Cathdawg, God of Atlamerica: Can unpledged electors second-preference a candidate to indicate who we'd support in the House and Senate if the winner is denied a majority in the electoral college?

If so:

[1] Fulbright/Morse (Anti-Vietnam War Unpledged Electors)
[2] MCS/Wayne Morse
[3] MCS/RL HHH JFK
[4] MCS/Barry Goldwater
[5] LBJ/JFK

This is a high-turnout election for a race in which the two main candidates are pretty similar (although I suppose the strength of unpledged electors reflects voter dissatisfaction).

You're just doing this to get LBJ out of the way, aren't you?

Is this a trick question?

I would take

McGovern/Morse '69-'77
Church/Mondale '77-85

Over Humphrey being anywhere near the white house any day!
