Needless to say, as the author of the law in question, I have no intention of signing this. I'm more than happy to address vaccine misinformation promoted by the sponsor, though. For instance, COVID causes heart damage and the risk of cardiac injury from the virus is much higher than post-vaccine myocarditis. And while getting vaccinated does not guarantee never catching it, they are very effective in preventing COVID from being potentially catastrophic, requiring hospitalization, or causing long-term damage to the heart and lungs.

Once again, tabling requires a supermajority when it's easier to just vote the bill up or down. I would be surprised if this bill passes but I will veto if it does.

So, you would veto a popular bill because it goes against your political agenda? Guess it will have to wait until I’m president!

I was elected to do what I see fit, and I've seen no indicators of how popular or unpopular the policy is. Whether the bill dies in the Senate or I veto it, it is not becoming policy as long as I am in the White House.

I would also add that repealing the bill in its entirety would effectively remove COVID-19 from the list of required immunizations prior to entry in the Republic of Atlasia, let alone resident aliens or prospective citizens. It would be highly unusual to exclude COVID-19 immunization as a condition for entry or immigration/naturalization.

I have to say that supporting the vaccine mandate is something inconsistent with my otherwise libertine views on individual rights. That mandate was intended to be the atom bomb to end mask mandates (which I would argue are far more intrusive), put teachers and students back in the classroom, and reopen society. I emphasized this point heavily a few weeks ago, and I am disappointed that some teachers continue to demand remote learning.

Regardless, 2022 is the year of normalcy. The unvaccinated have had ample time to get the free vaccine and chose not to. At this point, they are ultimately responsible for their own health.

I am open to compromising a sunset clause, but I don't want it any shorter than January 1, 2023. For medical workers, it should be permanent, and we must require proof of vaccination in order to enter the country as either a citizen or non-citizen.

Don't forget folks that hospitals are often congested and have had to turn other patients away. That's not right, and it demonstrates how the choice not to get the vaccine has tangible consequences for other people.

I am willing to support the bill with Senator Cao's amendment under the condition that we stick to the sunset clause of January 2023. I am not willing to negotiate beyond that.

I just want people vaccinated. I want people to get the damn shot and move on from the pandemic. No more masks, no more social distancing, no more remote learning... and I'm even willing to put my money where my mouth is and deny federal funding to schools that go to remote learning without just cause. But I want people vaccinated and boosted.

So for this year, anything that increases vaccinations is a good thing in my book. I stand by keeping the temporary mandate in place this year even if it's had limited success.

Aye.

I like the idea but objecting because I'd prefer it to be March 2023, to make sure the winter wave passes without too many deaths and stress on the healthcare system.

That's a fair consideration, I'll change the sunset date to March if this passes.

Will that lose the support of the President though?

I would support a sunset date for March.

Vote the amendment down. There is not a chance in hell I'm letting unelected and unspecified bureaucrats have the final call on this.

Stick with the March 1st date. That is the only bill I will sign.
