I like how Sen. Levin gave President Bush credit for announcing this troop withdrawal and credit to President Obama for following through with Bush's recommendation.  It's also props to the US forces in Iraq that they have been able to keep the country under relative control over the past year or so.  Now, the United States Military can focus efforts on trying to bring troops home in Afghanistan and have more boots ready if we do have to go into places like Somalia, the Sudan, Iran, Bahrain, Yemen, or other trouble spots.  If we were still largely in Iraq and had to go into one of these situations that, undoubtedly, the Defense and State Departments are monitoring closely, we would be stretching an already thin military even thinner almost to the point of breaking.  Its like when you stretch a piece of elastic out too far, there are holes that begin forming in the middle.

Our current Major War Scorecard:

7-1-2-2
(Wins, Losses, Ties, Pending)

Where should Iraq go now that it's over?

I would put it either as Win or Pending.  We definitely did not lose it, and I don't think we tied, so I would put as pending with an eventual win.

The reason I say Pending is I don't think a war can really be judged until years after the last combat troops leave the country.  I would say no earlier than 2015-2020 time period will we know the full measure of Iraq.

For the record:

WINS: American Revolution, Mexican-American War, American Civil War, Philippine-American War, Sapnish-American War, World War One, World War Two, and Persian Gulf War.

LOSSES: Veitnam War

TIES: War of 1812, Korean War

PENDING: Bush's Wars.

How about Libya?

Well, Gaddafi's dead, but Saddam and Osama are dead too and their wars are still going on, so who knows? I'll just edit it so Libya is in the "pending" catagory.

To be fair on Afghany, OBL has only been dead 6 months, whereas Saddam has been dead going on 5 years, captured 8 years ago, and toppled 8 1/2 years ago.

Let's give Afghanistan a little more time before we judge based on the death of the central figure.
