Why don't Democrats hammer this? It gets me annoyed when Republicans just label everything as socialists, and that's enough to rile up their base, while Democrats don't even talk about blatant voter suppression efforts.

That's not true. Abrams has been waging a high-profile campaign against this in Georgia for years now. Democrats do talk about this all the time. If you said this 4+ years ago, I'd say yeah, you have a point, but it's not the same anymore.

Agreed. Though it seems "socialism" just scares more people off than "voter supression".

Part of the issue is that something high-profile like voter ID itself is and sounds like a common sense idea, but the implementation and motivations behind constitute what is unacceptable. Other measures usually involve a lot of opaque rule changes that aren't really blatant and in-your-face like a literacy test or poll tax is. That's the point, too. Just keep making changes that make voting more and more uncomfortable until the effects compound and you've sufficiently shrunk the opposition's pool of voters.

I wouldn't expect to get much sympathy from the average Republican voter, either. Trump's incessant whining about this election has been enough to turn the base against absentee voting, so we're probably in for another 10 years of escalating election law fights not unlike this latest scheme in Georgia.

Also imagine taking Rachel Bitcofer seriously, lol

She literally got her time in the spotlight by posting non-stop in the Twitter feeds of high-profile election analysts and other ET people. With that in mind, it's not terribly surprising to see how things have played out up to now.

Only if Democrats are stupid in how they go about it. There's a pretty simple way to do it constitutionally:
1. Contract the capital district down to the national Mall area, where nobody lives.
2. Admit the remainder of the old capital district as a new state.
3. Assign the electors of the new (unpopulated) capital district to the winner of the national popular vote.

In theory I agree and was pretty bullish about this under the previous SCOTUS, but sometimes I wonder how this court will react. One constant theme of the conservative wing in the Roberts era is that they almost always rule in favor of Republicans when it comes to issues affecting their viability in elections. The few times they don't generally involve schemes or arguments so badly bungled by the conservative side that they have no choice but to shoot it down, and even then, usually narrowly. So with the threat of 2 solidly Democratic Senators padding the Democratic Party's majority... I don't know.

Can't wait to spend hours watching clueless Republicans unironically whine about Democrats "finding votes" just days after the audio of a 1 hr Trump call is leaked where he literally begs Georgia's SoS to """find""" enough votes for him to win.

You know, because reality wasn't already pathetic before. The writers had to throw in this tidbit to spice it up even more.

Also, unrelated, this is on the top 10 of the top ten most replied threads.

That's probably going to happen more and more with these kinds of threads because with the hardware upgrade and other forum optimizations, it's no longer necessary to split large threads at ~80 pages anymore. We can keep it going up to 150-200, or more, depending on how long the thread will stay active. For example, this thread will probably die out within a week or so, so there is no point in starting a new one.

Ah, I see Trump is taking the Emperor Palpatine approach to government: "If I can't have it, no one can"
