I know, the illustrations really spooked me as a youngin', although the stories themselves aren't that spooky in hindsight.

Childhood scary stories rarely are.

And of course one of the first images from a Google search was the one that always creeped me out the most - spider eggs embedded in a girl's cheek hatching:
