There's never going to be one exact law that makes everyone happy when you have to assign an arbitrary age limit to something, and that goes for driving laws, voting laws, drinking laws, and age of consent. I'm far from an expert in this particular field, but personally I think a reasonable compromise is having 18 as the lowest age of content for any age difference between partners, and restricting sex where one person is under 18 to couples with an age difference of 5 years or less, maybe shrinking that number as the lower age goes down. But again, I don't want to be the staffer who writes the legalese for that bill.

I'm just speaking for myself, but I know I was not in a place to meaningfully consent to sex with someone significantly older than me when I was 16.

Gaetz has failed to learn one of the most important lessons of the Trump era for Republicans facing scandals: have no shame. Now all we have to do is prove any of this is true and his career will be over. Maybe he should have just come out and said "Yeah, I did all this. So does everyone! They're just trying to take me down because I'm a threat!"

Take off this what you will. I do think random "in the know" liberals will be a bit better informed under Biden than they were under Trump, just because of who controls places like the DoJ, but I don't know why this guy in particular would know more than the rest of us.

The Ethics Committee said in a statement that its decision to investigate “does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred.”

In laying out its probe, the panel said it was also aware of public allegations against Mr. Gaetz involving the misuse of state identification records, and the acceptance of a bribe, improper gratuity or impermissible gift, in violation of House rules, laws or other standards of conduct.

At this point, it looks like he will be a congressman behind bars until and unless he becomes ineligible to hold public office due to the part of Florida's Civil Death Penalty (you are rendered a partial non-adult citizen upon conviction of a felony) law that wasn't repealed. I forget if it would even apply to him as a Federal office holder.

Maybe this is just what Florida needs to get the right on board with fixing their laws on felons and prisoners.

ABC News: DOJ adds 2 top prosecutors to Matt Gaetz investigation, sources say

Two top prosecutors in the Justice Department were added several months ago to the ongoing federal probe examining sex trafficking allegations against Rep. Matt Gaetz, two sources familiar with the matter confirmed to ABC News.

The Washington-based prosecutors, one with expertise in child exploitation crimes and the other a top official in the DOJ's Public Integrity Section, have been on the Florida-based case since at least July. In recent months, they joined a team in Florida that's been looking into whether Gaetz violated federal law by providing goods or payments to a 17-year-old girl in exchange for sex, sources confirmed to ABC News. The news of the new prosecutors was first reported by The New York Times.

Gaetz has not been charged with a crime and has denied any wrongdoing. In a statement to ABC News on Thursday, a spokesperson for Gaetz said, "Congressman Gaetz is innocent. The former DOJ official who tried to extort him is guilty. No number of political operative prosecutors at a politically weaponized DOJ will change this."

It's interesting to remember the first word we had of this scandal was that Gaetz was going to be accepting some other job and declining to run for re-election. But after the story broke, all that went away. Kind of seems like he's learned the lesson of the Trump era to just never show shame or acknowledge any wrongdoing and everyone but your critics will just move on with no damage to your career prospects.
