In 1980, Elizabeth Holtzman defeats Al D'Amato in the race for NY-senate because Jacob Javits doesn't run under the Liberal Party. She wins reelection in 1986 and decides to seek the Dem nomination for POTUS in 1992. In a stunning upset, she wins and becomes the main challenger of incumbent HW Bush.
