If Nelson Rockefeller had remained on the ticket with Gerald Ford in 1976, would the election have gone the same way?

288: Pres. Gerald Ford(R-MI)/Vice Pres. Nelson Rockefeller(R-NY) - 51.9%
250: Fmr. Gov. James Carter(D-GA)/Sen. Russell Long(D-LA) - 46.0%

Why is Ford doing so much better than he actually did?
