Ferraro ’92 - Keep the Promise
President Ferraro is facing an uphill battle for re-election. The American economy has begun a slow recovery the economic hardship of the past two years is still fresh in the public’s mind. The president’s perceived weakness in foreign affairs and waffling on the trade issue led to a primary challenge from Ross Perot, a battle that she narrowly won. The president is promising to end stagnant job growth by signing NAFTA, to cut taxes for the middle class, to pursue peace with the new leadership of the Soviet Union, and to spearhead healthcare and education reform.
Clint for President- Go Ahead, Make America Great Again!
Clint Eastwood emerged early-on as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. Eastwood maintained a considerable lead throughout the primary season but faced a serious challenge from the Buchananite wing of the party in the person of Jesse Helms. Eastwood’s controversial positions on social issues made many traditional Republicans uneasy; Eastwood is an atheist who supports marriage equality, abortion rights, and what he calls ‘common sense gun control’. Nevertheless, his universal name recognition and charisma virtually guaranteed him the nomination. The Eastwood platform calls for cuts in taxes and even bigger cuts in federal spending, free trade without NAFTA, a balanced budget by 1996, and non-intervention abroad; Eastwood does, however, support bringing Western Ukraine and the Baltic States into NATO. Eastwood has chosen the recently re-elected governor of Texas Ron Paul as his vice presidential pick.
