The nation will survive as will most of its people, but as for being a defacto democracy (or a representative democracy/republic), I doubt it.

"A Republic if you can keep it."  Well, the USA had 231 years after this comment.  I guess that was about all that could be expected.

I think the people who are afraid of immigrants, legal or illegal are the real hysterical ones.

A "Fourth Reich" will do one thing the Third Reich did -- get too many enemies at once and end up defeated by them. America might survive, even if those who got America into wars for profit that end with those intended for slavery or serfdom fight back and eventually defeat it -- impose a new constitutional order that will make a resurgence of the militarist, classist, and racist ideology impossible.

No -- America will survive Trump; the Roman Empire, a decrepit entity from its inception, survived Nero, Caligula, and Commodus. After this nightmare we will want to change things so that we never get a leader like him again. Imperial Rome lasted until it ran out of resources.

We might end up with a Westminster-style Parliament which has well served the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. We might keep our federal system as it is, except for fortifying the liberal constraints against economic power in politics through constitutional amendments, as is so in Germany.

President Trump engenders mass contempt as no other President has done. He is a sick joke easy to pillory in the mass media. It's telling that the most effective analysis of news is comedy -- because silly ideas fail the laugh test. One couldn't laugh at Barack Obama even if he has a  good sense of humor and can crack a joke convincingly. One can laugh with him, and not so easily at him -- unless the joke gets mean-spirited. With Trump one can laugh at him... until he does something that hurts people.

...If Trump wanted to be President, then why didn't he have a collection of quotes from Lincoln?

1.I think you are being overly optimistic and I actually disagree with you.  When the wealthy and powerful conservatives have all the leavers to effectively turn the United States into a defacto authoritarian conservative dictatorship, I don't see any way the United States overturns that short of the U.S military (which would never overthrow an American government.)

2.However, I was being deliberately provocative in referring to this as 'the Fourth Reich' to see if I got any responses against that.  It has always bothered me that, especially at the height of the Cold War, the so-called liberal media would never say anything like that, but had no problem with idiotic references to places like Massachusetts as 'the People's Republic of Massachusetts.'

So, whenever I see some idiot journalist (Stu Rothenberg for instance) casually laugh about "a People's Republic" I always reply along the lines of "You mean as opposed to the Fourth Reich of Oklahoma (or Kansas...)?"

It's happening right now. Just because there aren't literal stormtroopers doesn't mean it's not happening.

It Can't Happen Here is a semi-satirical 1935 political novel by American author Sinclair Lewis,[1] and a 1936 play adapted from the novel by Lewis and John C. Moffitt.[2]

Published during the rise of fascism in Europe, the novel describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a politician who defeats Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) and is elected President of the United States, after fomenting fear and promising drastic economic and social reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and "traditional" values. After his election, Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes a plutocratic/totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, in the manner of Adolf Hitler and the SS
