No way Newsom does other than appoint a caretaker who will be a safe Democratic vote in the Senate while the primary sorts out the eventual winner.

He ain’t appointing a Republican so some pundit can claim he’s bipartisan.😂

I would recommend Secretary of State Shirley Weber.  She’s old enough to see a 15 month gig as a fitting cap to her career.

Interesting that Newsom appointed her to replace Padilla when he replaced Harris.

Replacing the vice-president requires a majority vote in both houses of Congress.

I think the rules have been changed since then to eliminate just this type of gamesmanship among newly elected senators.
