The rise of right-wing populism and anti-intellectualism in general.
Wouldn't you say a lot of this is to blame on academia too. Like seeing the reaction of much of academia to 10/7 shows you how much academia has gone all in on the majority= oppressor and minority= oppressed belief . Also the emphasis on how the police is racist and having borders is racist along with standardized tests being racist all directly came from academia and the policy proposals that were implemented from that belief all were disastrous.
Add in the numerous lies during COVID on how the hid the lab leak stuff and it should be no surprise that Academia is no longer trusted.
