Id say the 3 biggest Reasons were:
1. The State of the Economy
2. HW Being the VP of a popular administration
3. The electoral map being so titled against Northern Democrats at the time
Willy Horton probably cost Dukakis Maryland and maybe Illinois but I doubt it cost him more than that. Its just that in those days candidates used to get huge bumps right after being nominated and especially after their conventions which is when Dukakis huge lead happened.
