Hmm I wonder if this will be 2016 in reverse with the Republicans expected to win but a last-minute surge by the other party allows them to pull out the upset.

Ronald Reagan: My plan is endorsed by numerous economists and professionals.

Jerry Brown: None of them was ever right on much.

Lol, get him Jerry.

Milton Friedman would disagree Tongue

What's interesting about election nights back then is how differently each network called elections. NBC for example called Mississippi for Reagan right as the polls closed while for CBS it was one of the last states they called in OTL.

Anyway hopefully Reagan wins but even if he doesn't, hopefully he still wins California.

There is still potentially a chance for Missouri to be the deciding state which could cause the election to be in some ways decided by the courts

Democrats are probably happy Jerry Brown is the nominee so far as no other Democrat would probably have a chance to win California which would pretty be ball game for them.

I assume I probably would be constantly flipping between the networks here to see what is going on and see what network is giving the fastest updates . My views probably would be very similar to George Will’s as well as I do think he was most prominent conservative pundit on tv in those days so I may decide to watch ABC as well

The Missouri Bellwether actually will decide the whole ball game this time which is insane as its basically a combination of Florida and Ohio from the 2000s(Florida being the super close deciding state and Ohio the Bellwether).

A way this election could be crazier than 2000 is if the opposite party from the beneficiary of the case control the legislature.  There were talks in 2000 given different methods leading to different results there being two sets of electoral votes being certified and congress then having to vote which one to throw out

So in this case assuming the Democrats control the legislature and the SCOTUS case going against Brown you could see a scenario where there are two sets of electoral votes from Missouri being certified(one by Bond and one by the Dem legislature) that would force Congress to choose which set of electoral votes they would accept.

Fantastic update! Looking forward to the Brown presidency, especially what he's doing in foreign policy. I'm also curious what happens to Frank Church, as he technically didn't survive the term he hast been elected to (dying in April of 1984).

Election results kind of resemble actual 2000: MO is FL, SD is NH and OR is NM. The changes map looks pretty insane with every D state being a flip, lol.

Actually Oregon is Oregon Tongue

I think there's an opening here that Brown's Afghanistan policies could be a net plus for America in the long run. As questionable as the Soviet invasion was, we clearly supported the wrong people there that came back to haunt us.

In the short run, Brown may be seen as weak on communism though. But as long as he gets the economy back, it shouldn't be much of an issue and he'll win reelection.

The Soviets did arguably more evil things in Afghanistan than the Tailban did

https://adamtooze.substack.com/p/adam-toozes-chartbook-30-back-to

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet–Afghan_War

Quote
Between 6.5%–11.5% of Afghanistan's population is estimated to have perished in the conflict. The war caused grave destruction in Afghanistan

Quote
Irrigation systems, crucial to agriculture in Afghanistan's arid climate, were destroyed by aerial bombing and strafing by Soviet or government forces. In the worst year of the war, 1985, well over half of all the farmers who remained in Afghanistan had their fields bombed, and over one quarter had their irrigation systems destroyed and their livestock shot by Soviet or government troops, according to a survey conducted by Swedish relief experts.[262] Everything was the target in the country, from cities, villages, up to schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, factories and orchards. Soviet tactics included targeting areas which showed support for the Mujahideen, and forcing the populace to flee the rural territories the communists were unable to control. Half of Afghanistan's 24,000 villages were destroyed by the end of the war

So yah I hope congress overrides Brown on this even with IRL hindsight cause the Soviets were the greater of the evils

That’s a pretty interesting electoral reform proposal as it does increase the importance of the national vote but the state by state EC results would clearly be more important

I like the idea of the PV winner getting 50 EV’s. Could’ve had Presidents Gore and Hillary Clinton in OTL.

I’m not sure if Gore wins the PV in this scenario as the campaign would be a little different and given how close the PV was we have no idea how that ends up in the end .

Hillary still loses 306-282 though

Would you support the 50 additional votes proposal?

Hmm yah since it doesn’t undermine the electoral college system I’d support it . It still makes it so you still have to do well State by state but it also gives the national vote some importance too and in super close races makes it so the results of one or two very close states aren’t as influential .

I’d give him a solid B so far as I am supportive of his agenda on domestic policy and I hope he succeeds in repealing Taft-Hartley which is terrible law . I am also supportive of his stimulus plan and hope that some sort of deal passes and currently I’m happy that Reagan didn’t win as we are seeing how badly Thatcherism so far is failing in the UK and we don’t need the leading economic power on earth to go down the same route . Hopefully Labour and The Alliance Party work together in 1983 to bring a Brown style government to the UK

On foreign affairs I like that he is trying to reduce tensions with adversaries and think that’s the right approach to go . I do not agree with the Eisenhower era approach of arming rebels  just cause they are anti communist and it’s good to see President Brown not go down that approach

I’d give it a D as his foreign policy so far has been way too passive against the communists and I hope congress overrides his decision to block arms to anti communist rebels . His economic stimulus plan also doesn't go anywhere near as far enough and there needs to be major tax cuts all across the board for us to get out of this crises . Inflation was caused by a supply crises and supply side economics are the perfect antidote to get us out of this mess .

People should watch Milton Friedman’s free to choose series as it’s a great one and it explains why we are in the crises we are . Kemp 1984!!!!!

Lmao, this actually reads pretty realistic. Good work!

Thanks , it would actually be interesting to see how many posters would be of the opposite party here . Fuzzy for sure would be a dem (though he was in IRL at this point too and said he liked Rockefeller  ) and S019 would probably be a Republican though he probably would have supported Brown over Reagan .

I give him A-, he’s calling for the right policies, but the party turned away already.

The recent drop in approval ratings is only the beginning, my friends. Brown managed to pull it off by a mere 200 votes in a usually red-leaning state against a candidate who had over a decade of smears as baggage. And even this guy is now leading Brown by double digits. Hell, he can’t even get beyond a tie against Curb! Brown is absolutely going to lose in ’84, and very badly. I guess the real poll here is only the one against Ford, who has universal name recognition. Any Republican will get 54% of the vote. The 50 EV amendment will absolutely pass, and we haven't won the NPV since 1968. So I wouldn't be surprised to see another 500+ EV. GOP win.

Brown will be at 35% approval in November and we lose 50 House seats at minimum. 1984 will be a 1952 redux at best.

Lol, Rs arent winning House. Dont you realize we’re 300 days from election and PREZ BROWN is gonna pass minimum wage with secular trifecta? ßtop dooming. You are Raygun apologist and predicted 400 EV nut🌰🌰map.

Gallup is corrupted pollster said Ford is up before dropped out of race due to fact Rockefeller had heart attack when he was with females in office. Now hes gone and Rs cant crack 270 freiwall NROWN created with CA. Thats why Cavez was put in cabinet despite Rs voting against nomination😎😎 We need more polls in 300 days, but its gonna be 240(180 H since no 270 state has flipped anyways😆
