Smith got back a lot of the German-American vote the Democrats had lost post-WWI.   La Follette's strongest states (MN, ND, and WI) had high concentrations of these voters.  In these states, the Democrats received less than 10% of the vote in 1924 but became reasonably competitive- in 1928.
