How much of the LaFollete vote in 1924 went to Hoover and Smith? I'm guessing that since he was a progressive Republican that's where the majority of his voters went but there probably was a decent minority of progressive Democrats that refused to support Davis and while it's unlikely that they would have been wild about a machine politician like Smith might have found him slightly more acceptable.

I’m pretty sure that a majority Protestant LaFollette supporters backed Hoover, the overwhelming majority of Catholic ones voted for Smith.

Smith got back a lot of the German-American vote the Democrats had lost post-WWI.   La Follette's strongest states (MN, ND, and WI) had high concentrations of these voters.  In these states, the Democrats received less than 10% of the vote in 1924 but became reasonably competitive- in 1928.

In 1928, believe it or not, LaFollette was dead.

In my home state of Washington there was a lot of anti catholic prejudice, so most of the La Follette vote went to Hoover. Smith did manage to carry Ferry County though, which was the first time in 12 years where a democrat carried a county in Washington.
