Well, Israel did support Hamas as recently as the early 1990s because they believed, for some reason, that an Islamic fundamentalist group would somehow be less hostile to Israel than a Soviet-allied revolutionary guerilla group would be.

That's a very good point. Islamism has thrown Syria into chaos, ensured that Egypt is busy at home, split Sunni from Shia, split Christian Arab from Muslim Arab, split Palestine and weaken any potential alliance against Israel. Of course the Israeli long term problem are if the Islamists win and/or if Israel succeed in alienate it western "allies". No matter what some Israeli thinks, there's no alternative sugar daddy other than USA
China? Or even Russia (I assume Moscow doesn't care about playing both sides)?
