I'm sure Trump is smart enough to not pick a LePage, West, Palin, Cuban, Carson, Cruz, or some other controversial outsider.  I think he wants a safe, solid pick to counterbalance his lack of experience, be an important tool once he's in the White House, and bring gravitas and credibility to the ticket. 

How many people in the latter category would actually agree to join the ticket though?
