this would basically guarantee that they'd lose

Many in the party elite would rather lose with a candidate they're OK with than win with a candidate who they hate.  And of course, there are other races besides the presidential race.  The CW among many in the party leadership is that Trump as nominee would be a disaster for downballot races, and so stopping him from being the nominee is desirable even if the means by which he's stopped is "ugly".

Ryan getting drafted as the presidential nominee so soon after getting drafted as House Speaker would be a House of Cards-esque plot twist.
