Since they are preparing for the possibility of one.

I wish! Sad

I seriously heard that Paul Ryan might be a potential pick. But, I think after the meeting about a contested convention monday night, I don't see any candidates dropping out after Super Tuesday. Hell, even winning just the territories might put that candidate as a possibility to win the nod! Cheesy

Drafting Ryan as Speaker of the House only to draft him for president ~9 months later would look pretty silly and desperate.

I could see McCain if he's up to it.

A poetic sort of "Buyers' remorse" commentary to the voters on the last eight years.

Probably Romney.  Condi would be ideal, but I don't think she'd accept it

Almost certainly Cruz, since it would presumably be caused by a 3-way delegate split between Trump, Cruz and Rubio. The first thing the establishment would do is try to get all the superdelegates behind Rubio and use various inducements to try to poach delegates from Trump and Cruz, with the goal of getting Rubio to a majority or close enough to a majority that he's the only possible nominee. But failing that, the Trump and Rubio camps aren't going to make a deal with each other, so Cruz would have all the leverage needed to be the nominee; if one side won't back him he can threaten to do a deal with the other.

If for whatever reason Cruz isn't a plausible nominee (for example, that he's a distant third in the popular vote, that he dropped out, that he burned all his bridges with the Rubio camp or that he had a major scandal), then the party establishment would, once again, try to nominate Rubio. Failing that they'd try Paul Ryan, and if they can't get someone who toes the party establishment line on immigration then, at that point, they'd turn to Romney.

Many in the party elite would rather lose with a candidate they're OK with than win with a candidate who they hate.  And of course, there are other races besides the presidential race.  The CW among many in the party leadership is that Trump as nominee would be a disaster for downballot races, and so stopping him from being the nominee is desirable even if the means by which he's stopped is "ugly".

There's absolutely no way Paul Ryan would get himself suckered into that job.

Ryan getting drafted as the presidential nominee so soon after getting drafted as House Speaker would be a House of Cards-esque plot twist.

Probably some governor.  Nikki Haley would be a dark horse, but not impossible, choice in those circumstances. but only if the goal is to stem damage to future prospects rather than win this time.

Paul Ryan, as House Speaker he is to be convention chairman,  could see his calmness in a sea of madness, be the tipping point, a stampede starts and all delegates look towards as the only one plausible enough to be considered. He is nominated by acclamation and selects Governor Susanna Martinez of New Mexico as his Vice president.
