If two incumbent governors in a row lose primaries, can we end the MUH HAWAII ALWAYS LOVES INCUMBENTS meme which originated solely because Dubya did better than expected there 14 years ago?

This always struck me as a vaguely racist idea - "oh you know these Asians they always love their strong leaders!" They only kept Inouye and Akaka round for so long because of the huge amounts of cash they got for having entrenched senior incumbents, which is the same for all small and overlooked states.

Well, Akaka and Inouye also never did anything wrong per se that should have had them lose re-election in the primary or the general (except for Inouye and his sexual harassment, but it was sadly a different time...)

Additionally - I really don't agree that Ige should be blamed for any of this. Of course, I understand why he is, but I don't agree with it. I'm not sure what he, or anyone else in his position could have done.

Gabbard is endorsing Hanabusa.

Not looking good for Ige at all. Unless something exceedingly corrupt about Hanabusa comes out (which isn't impossible), he's toast.

Seems like Gabbard is getting in Hanabusa's good graces, if something happens to Hirono she'd be first in line to replace her.

Exactly. Hirono has stage four cancer, and is running for re-election. I wish her the best, but the odds of her serving out another term to completion are reasonably low.

i.e. impossible. It's impolite, but it's also insane to re-elect a 70 year old person with stage four cancer.

Ige has raised more than $800,000 for re-election bid, more than Hanabusa.
