The problem with succession by red States is the real division anymore isn't between red States and blue ones, but rather between rural / small town America versus its cities, with suburbs being the Battleground.

This is a good point.  Any hypothetical future civil war would be nothing like the first one.  In general, the Northern farmers and Northern city-folk were united in their support for the Union and in the South the same was generally true.
