The NYDem's aren't on the verge of have their casket closed though, the last thing the NYGOP needs now is the big names endorsing the other side.

It makes little difference at this point.  No matter who Al D'Amato endorsed, the NYDems will have a Hugo Chavez style monopoly on government by the end of the decade.
