Imagine making a poll on bands of the 80s and including freaking Poison and a bunch of other sh**tty hair metal bands ahead of Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Husker Du, The Replacements, Minor Threat, Rites of Spring, Dinosaur Jr, Joy Division/New Order, Ramones...

Of the ones listed, The Clash. U2 achieved more, but their best work was in the 90s.

All those bands are not good simple besides the Ramones of what you listed lol. Sonic Youth could never get into.
So you don't have ears, then. Sorry to hear that.

A lot of my favorite artists of the 80s were solo acts, but in addition to those mentioned by Santander et al I'll nominate Bauhaus, REM, XTC, Public Enemy, and the 80s version of King Crimson (really its own distinct band).
Adrian Belew is a god.

I'm fascinated that The Smiths are leading. During the 80s I barely heard their music, and they were seen more as a band with a cult following. I know that a lot of later bands were influenced by The Smiths, but they seemed to me to hearken back to 60s style playing, but with depressing punkish lyrics.
I put them in a category of bands that have cult followings and are loved by some critics, but are overrated by their followers. I'd put a bunch of other 80s bands like Dinosaur Jr, Spacemen 3, REM (who were a cult band in the 80s), The Cure, and XTC in the same category. Certainly, none of them were bad (unlike the hair metal sh**t in the poll here), and I like some of them, but still overrated for me.
