Yes, it sucks, even if you don't know/like them. Fortunately, I can count the number of times I've had to do this on one hand, and never with a personal friend.

On the other hand, I also frequently encourage companies to realize post-deal "synergies" (i.e. laying people off), but I never feel bad about it. Business is business, and deadwood needs to go.
