East South Central narrowly misses out because of Mississippi.

If you draw a straight line between Mobile and Detroit, the line crosses through or within an hour's drive of all of my favorite cities in America - Huntsville, Nashville, Louisville, Lexington, Cincinnati and Detroit. The further you go from that line, the worse it gets.
