I actually think Obama would've won even bigger in 08 against Romney. An out of touch millionaire running right after the economic collapse would've been pretty bad optics. Obama picks up MO/MT and a point or two more in the popular vote.

I think McCain would've performed better than Romney in 2012. The public wasn't as war weary by then, which is one of McCain's biggest weaknesses. He's also a lot more "likable and trustworthy" than Romney. On top of that, McCain favored immigration reform and wouldn't have had Romney's self deportation problem. Obama loses FL (maybe OH as well) and a point in the popular vote.

Interesting. The theory of Romney doing worse than McCain in 08 seems pretty clear cut, but what makes you think McCain would do worse than Romney in 12?
