I think these races come down to who turns out. Usually you would say lower turnout helps Republicans, but they may just discouraged by Biden's victory, while Democrats are energized.

I wonder whether Loeffler and Perdue lose their mandate on January 3?

Just wondering, if Warnock wins but Ossoff loses (something I think is extremely unlikely, tbh), could Democrats try to convince Murkowski to pull a Jim Jeffords and caucus with them? She'd go from being in an obstructionist majority to probably the single most powerful Senator, and she doesn't seem to be all that loyal to Mitch or the GOP.

Voting for Barrett indicated Murkowski was throwing her lot with the GOP completely, imo.

I agree. Though Murkowski would actually be smart to become an Independent caucusing with the Democrats if she plans to run for reelection. She will lose a Republican primary in 2022, and I'm not convinced she can pull another write-in win as in 2010. She'd be better off running as Independent while Democrats don't field an own candidate. Her approval among Democrats is even higher than among Republicans.

Potentially stupid question: What are the chances Donald Trump throwing Perdue and Loeffler under the bus now that the Secretary of State has certified the results (assuming Kemp follows Raffensberger)? So a Republican internal war would be great.

Donald Trump always accused Obama of politicizing the Justice Department. The guy always accuses others what he's guilty of.

The question is how many voters in Georgia pay attention to the New York Times? Especially those who don't vote Democratic anyway.

Joe Biden is out campaigning for them at this moment. Come on, Georgia, deliver the president the senate to get things done.

Ossoff's campaign has been impressive to me. I'll be highly disappointed if he doesn't do better than Warnock. He deserves to do 2-3% better than Warnock imo

He still seems pretty generic, but he's sharp for such an inexperienced person

He's definitely a very sharp guy. Do you get the feeling he's gonna win?

I agree, but if he loses this one, I'm not sure he can run in the near future again. Third times charm? Maybe.

The question is whether the percentage breakdown is similar to Joe Biden in November and how many votes Democrats can net out.

CNN exit poll claiming that college-educated whites have swung 10 points to Perdue from November. Not sure how useful/reliable that is, but something nonetheless.

But Ossoff increased his share among African American voters. But I would take exit polls with a huge grain of salt.

So what non-political things are you guys doing tonight?

I’m playing Call of Duty right now.

It's already past midnight in Germany, but tomorrow is a holiday, so I can stay up.

Can we send Stacey Abrams to Florida, let her fix the state party there?

Make her DNC Chair.

If Warnock and Ossoff actually win, all Democrats and leaners should get a D-GA avatar for a week.

This is definitely a great way to start the new year. I never thought this was possible after early happened and the disappointments in Maine and North Carolina. However, these losses may have energized Democrats to turn out because everything was on the line.

Stacey Abrams really deserves a huge thank you. Hope she either becomes governor or DNC Chair. I also can't express how thankful I am to African American voters. They saved Uncle Joe in the primary, elected him president and now delivered him a senate he can work with. While 50-50 + Kamala is a very narrow path to operate on, I'm still optimistic meaningful stuff can get done on numerous issues. Hopefully some Republicans like Romney or Collins are on board with some things as well.

What I'm especially excited about is Georgia electing an African American Pastor and a Millennial Jew, given the history of this state. Voters turned the page from the old South to the New South.

And last but not least, forgive me some Schadenfreude, Majority Leader Schumer and Minority Leader McConnell sounds awesome. Cocaine Mitch finally got what he deserved.

Is there a sense of when Warnock and Ossoff will be sworn in? I remember Doug Jones didn't join the Senate until several weeks after the special election in 2017. Could McConnell still be the majority leader the first week or two of the Biden Presidency?

With regard to Ossoff, probably depends on how close the regular election will be. The New York Times projects a 1.1% win, which is outside recount territory. Warnock's win should be certified very soon. I'm not familiar with exact senate procedures, but I doubt this can be delayed for very long.

I had thought that Warnock should be sworn in first and immediately, as Loeffler was appointed as interim and this is for a 2 year term and has to run again in 2022.  I would think that this should make Warnock the senior senator and Ossoff the junior.

Well, Perdue's term has expired since January 3 and the seat is vacant. So Ossoff's term is already shortened by a few days.

Per CNN, Ossoff now ahead by 24,000 votes. 50.3% to 49.7%, out of recount territory.

Have Loeffler and Perdue officially conceded? Or is this the new Republican norm just refuse conceding defeat?

Do the concessions and therefore lack of action to delay certifactions affect the swearing in dates?

I dont know about certifications of elections but concessions are just a formality not a legal requirement

I just meant that there is no recount and no legal actions by Republicans that would have delayed the process to play out.

Not sure this has been discussed yet, but according to Wikipedia, Warnock will become junior senator because of his last name and Ossoff preceding him alphabetically.
