That doesn't really work given the ANC did use violent means to resist apartheid.
I have a habit of being unnecessarily vague when I shouldn't be. I'm referring to late 1980s/1990s Mandela, rather than 1950s Mandela (who I also approve of)- eg his decision to initiate peace talks with the regime in 1990, coinciding with the dismantling of the armed wing of ANC, as well as that crown act of treachery, appointing de Klerk as his vice president.

The point I'm trying to make is that Mandela was smart enough to figure out that sometimes violence is productive, and sometimes it's, well, counterproductive.
