Are there any actual notable ideological differences between Porter and Schiff? I can totally understand why people might prefer one but it's weird how some are hyping it up as much more than a personality contest.

Newsom would most likely just appoint a seat warmer meaning that anyone who currently holds elected office is probably out. London Breed won't want to resign as SF mayor to serve an incomplete Senate term and there's really no reason to believe she's even a likely candidate unless as noted you are unaware that more than one black woman lives in California.

This is an odd race where I don't really dislike any of the candidates buy aren't thrilled with any either. Schiff is the most conservative of the three but no one doubts he'd be a standard party-line D voter. Porter is overrated (I never understood her popularity with #Resistance types for someone who is basically just Generic D and hasn't been in the House long until someone pointed out it's because she appears on cable news a lot, I guess that explains it) and her comments about Netanyahu's "reforms" were too stupid for words but she's probably just ignorant instead of malicious and would be another standard D party line voter. Really there's going to be next to no difference between her and Schiff in the Senate. Lee is way too old and might be more combative to D leaders but she honestly likely won't.

I'm betting though that Lee almost certainly loses to both Schiff and Porter. I'd say Porter is favored against Schiff but not heavily. Schiff's problem is that he's so demonized by Republicans he lacks any crossover appeal even if he's thereoretically the least of many evils by Republican standards.

Also Lee's age and the fact she hasn't ran for statewide office until now gives me the impression she was planning on retiring anyway and doesn't expect to win but figures one last campaign to put a cap on her career is worth it.

This is almost as lame as Stacey Abrams' weird campaign to be Biden's running mate.

Peak Atlas is that people are unironically speculating about Harris. Also the Vice-President is a member of the Senate as its President, so it would be a clear downgrade and probably leave Biden without the VP and Senate tiebreaker for the rest of his term.

Just appoint a new Vice President. The Senate isn’t currently tied.
A new VP has to be approved by both the House and Senate.

He gets single digits, comes in like fifth, and has an embarrassing end to his career? Not that interesting of a scenario.

Maryland's third Senator got appointed to Judiciary. Why were people dooming about this again?
It was a fabricated excuse concocted by Feinstein apologists for why she supposedly couldn't resign.

Wow I would've probably voted for Porter but after that cringe speech I'm glad she lost.

Also if you're not happy with the result blame her for running a lousy campaign. She wasted a strong early showing almost guaranteed to take second place.

A really sad ending to Barbara Lee's political career. She seemed to have no strategy beyond jumping in and hoping a vacancy would pop up and assumed she would get it by acting entitled to the position. It created an messy and disorganized campaign, and when the vacancy did pop up, her entitled insane troll logic position that Newsom must appoint her because it would be disrespectful to black women to let the primary play out democratically because Huh posed zero chance of convincing Newsom, but did generate her a lot of free negative press by making her sound delusional and actively hostile to elections as a concept. It was also bizarrely disrespectful to Laphonza Butler, a normal, uncontroversial Democrat and woman of color, for no reason, which is not a good look. She never seemed to have a Plan B for when her plan to humiliate herself in exchange for nothing didn't amount to anything, and all her presence in the race did was split the progressive vote and guarantee the more moderate candidate the Senate seat for the next 30 years. Embarrassing stuff, especially from someone whose career presented plenty to admire up until this past year
I think her thought process was she was probably going to retire anyway because she's old but figured one last campaign would be fun and if she won hey that's great, but yeah it was pretty selfish and her argument that Newsom was being disrespectful to black women by...appointing a black woman to the Senate seat was pure cringe.

Serious question: What was the supposed special appeal of Porter or her qualifications? I'm seeing stuff like this:

She just seems like a very standard Democrat. And I probably would've voted for her because she was ideologically closest to me of all the candidates running, but I haven't seen anything justifying the initial hype over her candidacy or these type of sour grapes takes.

Like yeah Schiff was the most conservative Democrat running and it's fine to be unhappy because of that, but he's objectively more qualified than Porter, impeachment manager + Chair of the House Intelligence Committee + over 20 years of House experience vs. 5 years of House experience as a backbencher...? Again there's pretty valid criticisms of Schiff but the Porter stanning fandom is a bit puzzling. (Although maybe that's why she crashed and burned.)

Disappointing, though I assume they just wait for all votes to be counted. As embarrassing as it is the counting takes so long.

That said, they deserved to lose at this stage. We certainly don't need to establish the Trump precedent in the Dem party that we no longer accept defeats anymore. That's just a huge middle finger to the voters of the winning candidate.
Yeah I probably would've voted for Porter as noted but her post-election behavior is absurd and she really deserved to lose. And I totally soured on Lee after that ridiculous "Newsom MUST appoint this one particular black woman or he's a terrible sexist/racist!" campaign.

I do think Schiff played dirty in the primary but I don't see the point of Porter going all scorched earth now. She's young and if things pan out right she should have an opening to come back to the House soon enough, but antagonizing the Dem establishment so directly could make things harder for her going forward. And yeah, at the end of the day Schiff will probably be a fine Senator and a clear improvement over Feinstein.
How so? By running a better campaign than Porter?

Porter and Schiff started out basically neck and neck, the fact that Porter collapsed so badly is a sign of how weak her campaign is. That's her fault, not her opponents'.

This is kind of like saying that it's the Chiefs' "fault" that the 49ers lost the Super Bowl, the Chiefs won because they just played a better game.

Thank you Schiff voters for your prescience!

By boosting Garvey's profile, obviously. Helping a Republican get on the ballot because he'll be easier to beat than a fellow Democrat is a dirty move, even if it makes perfect sense strategically.
That's the fault of the stupid California voting system. As long as that's in place candidates need to do what's best strategically under that system.

If some football coach doesn't like an NFL rule, that doesn't mean he can just have his team ignore it and instead play how he'd prefer the rules be until that rule is changed.

I don't give a sh*t about the NFL and I don't think anyone else in this thread does.

Of course the rules are the rules and I never said Schiff broke them. It's still playing dirty. If you don't see it you're just being obtuse.
It's called an analogy.

I just think what Porter is doing now is far worse and way more childish than anything Schiff did. She's also getting called out by Democrats everywhere (see my SoS above), and there seems to be a bit of a meme developing comparing her to some obviously drunk woman at a traffic stop.

...and she seems to be doubling down which makes her look even worse:
