4 years ago I said she was going to be a disaster, and look what happened.  Remember, I'm right 99% of the time.

The mandates in blue states are coming back next time the cases go up, which is going to be in a couple months max... so no, she did not kill them.

Move to 'normalcy' for a few months until cases start going up and his base demands new restrictions.

Maybe it vague and poorly defined but some term is needed to describe this type of New Left idpol that started surging around 2014ish and was extremely fringe prior. For example a certain word used to refer to Latino people that both them and I highly dislike...what should people who use it be described as?

I still think Vallas wins.

Earlier I said that I would've voted for Johnson in the first round but after reviewing things a bit more I'm back to saying I would've voted for Garcia. Some of Johnson's proposals especially his transit tax one are complete non-starters for me.

But I'd still vote for him in the runoff because Vallas just sucks that much.

Why can't Chicago get even a good candidate for mayor? Even Garcia isn't great, he's just not terrible. I guess Preckwinkle was good but she also got blown out.

If you're complaining that a politician sounds like a politician, i don't know what to tell you. Most people don't really care about that kinda stuff like they care about their kids education.

Theres all sorts of phrases that sound awkward that don't get the same attention. Y'know how every democrat repotically responds to shootings with calls for "commonsense gun reform"? Politicians always sound fake as fyck, whatever. Why focus on this particular word? Latinx was started by queer folks. The vast majority of latin folks arent queer so of course it sounds weird to most. Whatever, people literally dont care that much and if you are suggesting politicians should try to calibrate their language to "gain votes," i think that's a great strategy to sound fake as fyck.

Actually when I started going to my church the then lead pastor was Irish, although he was obviously not Catholic. He talked about going to a Catholic high school and had gone to Catholic schools his whole life until college and frankly they sounded awful. But anyway that guy was awesome. And he didn't seem to care about St. Patrick's Day.

Regardless I liked how he was an obvious counter-example to the claims by many here that people of Irish descent raised Catholic NEVER EVER leave Catholicism.

Just curious, does anyone have an idea how Vallas went from an abysmal 9th Place 5% finish 4 years ago to finishing top of the field with a solid third of the vote this time around?

The most likely explanation is simply that last time he was a dime-a-dozen White candidate for the people who take that into consideration /w their vote and this time he's the only one. Fitting, in a way, since Vallas has absolutely nothing else to offer Chicago besides that and privatizing their schools.

I'm sure someone else has a wonkier reason, and I wouldn't mind hearing it, but considering a Daley was literally on the ballot in 2019...

Yeah this is pretty much it. Daley would have made the runoff (and probably won) if Joyce hadn’t spoiled his chances in the first round last time. Jerry Joyce is lesser known but popular with white south siders.

This electorate not only consolidated, but also grew because of the attention that crime has gotten over the last couple of years. A lot of liberal northsiders voted for Lightfoot in 2019 and Vallas this time.

These are all great examples of why ranked voting is objectively superior to two round voting. It also saves money because only one election needs to be held.
