He caused a destructive war over a cause he did not believe he was just. It's the "Good German" complex. One who does not have the courage to oppose their nation or state when it is doing something they oppose is a true coward.

You said he opposed succession too. Therefore Lee participated in a destructive war for something he opposed. He was causing all this for nothing.

And it depends on the law in question. I doubt many would support refusing to pardon a man on death row you believe is innocent.
