I'll introduce that on Ebowed's behalf.

Nay, but I'd be amenable to the first clause in an amended form to clear up some of the language (I notice a loophole currently which could allow certain groups to take advantage). As a precedent, things we make legal at the federal level should be legal throughout the lands, in my opinion. I still, however, prefer the age of majority to be 18.

Aye

But we should probably not require that LSD have notation about "death due to alcohol abuse".

Aye

But I'm not sure this would end up passing, on the basis of Clause 3

I don't interpret the bill to prohibit public smoking bans.

I would certainly accept a redraft clarifying that position.

It just doesn't clarify. I support forbidding counties from banning the sale of alcohol/tobacco/whatever because people will just go elsewhere to get them and drive under the influence, but I want to make sure we still allow public places to be smoke free.

Since it's so unclear, let's add a provision in it.

Did this already pass?

Yeah, it's on your desk.

I support that provision.

I motion to resume debate.

Thanks for the clarification, Yankee.

I approve of TNF co-sponsoring the bill, for the record, even if that statement is not necessary for a few hours, yet.

Ok, I motion for a vote on the redraft.

I would encourage my fellow Senators to reject the redraft in its current form in order to resume debate and iron out the remaining issues.

TNF is co-sponsor, so I think he has to agree?

Why is LSD crossed out in 1b. but not in 1a.?

I just crossed out the full name, and I left the acronym. I just wanted to be consistent and refer to LSD and MDMA, as opposed to lysergic acid diethylamide and MDMA, which isn't parallel.

The minimum sentences are back. I like how Tyrion is dancing around the amendment. Dance, my boy! Tongue

I think a fine for selling to a minor is fine, but putting them in jail?

Recommended sentencing structures are important. Judges still have and can use discretion, but I think it's important to at least provide a framework of where we think those penalties should be.

And, I do love dancing Tongue

Well, I'm setting selling to a minor to be a congruent offense to selling alcohol or tobacco to a minor. I'm pretty sure you only face jail time in pretty extreme circumstances, otherwise it's just a fine and perhaps loss of license, both of which are certainly justified.

TNF, I'm mostly fine with your amendment, but I'm not comfortable with removing "jail time". If we have offenses that could lead to going to jail for selling alcohol and tobacco, we should punish offenders similarly for any other drug.

Is there jail time under our current drug laws somewhere?

Well, here's a source on the current pre-Nym laws:

Other than being able to charge the minor, I think it should be the same in Atlasia, unless it was changed. So the jail time isn't severe, and very often not mandated, but judges do have the discretion in extreme cases.

I do think jail time is appropriate for selling drugs to "very" underaged minors without regard to the law. People of that age cannot make informed decisions about what they choose to ingest; people at the point-of-sale should not be party to that sort of thing.

I could add a clause recommending that judges only use jail time for "severe" offenses?

Well, it'd have to be hostile now, because it would wipe away the changes that we just voted on. I would essentially accept the amendment sans the strikethrough of the "jail time" and "double penalty" clauses, since we just voted to keep that.
