In 1991, Incumbent Democratic Governor Ray Mabus lost to Republican Kirk Fordice.  Yet, Mabus carried the three coastal counties along the Gulf.  Those counties were already heavily Republican, and went heavily to Trent Lott when he was first elected Senator three years earlier.

Was Mabus just particularly popular on the coast, for some reason?
