Yes. Someone who voted for impeachment can't win.

It would be very weird for a Trump+8 state to have 2 Dem senators in the polarized era.

Yes. Someone who voted for impeachment can't win.

Why not? GOP primary voters care about a lot more than that.

Ah yes, "the 2022 Senate race in Ohio was always going to be competitive" even when Portman was considered a lock for re-election, & this is "the Democrats' No. 1 opportunity to flip a seat from (non-Atlas) red to (non-Atlas) blue" even though the open Toomey seat & John Fetterman's desire for it both exist. It almost makes too much sense!

Yes I know it's Fox News but still, would be an interesting primary if LeBron ends up running. He's arguably the most popular current NBA star at the moment.

Realistically though I think it's probably gonna be Jim Jordan vs Tim Ryan in the general.

LeBron wouldn't win either, the racists in Appalachia and the rurals would not vote for a black man from Cleveland

Ehhhh, lots of racist whites worship black athletes (as long as they don't speak out on racial justice issues a la Kaepernick).

I honestly think the Democrats might as well run Kyle Korver and LeBron James if they can get them on board. They'd probably energize minority turnout as much as any regular politician, and who knows, maybe it would be easier for Obama/Trump voters to vote for TV sports man. Moreover, even if they crash and burn, it's not like they've whiffed otherwise winnable races, plus no politician has their career ended.

The issue is LeBron is known for speaking out in favor of progressive causes, though

That's surprising. Given the fact the races is likely/safe Republican, this isn't necessarily good news since Portman is one of the more sane senate Republicans.

I know it sounds stupid & I'm not someone who thinks the final race will be close but it's always good to have Senate seats that are easier to win in the event of something insane happening either state wide (see George Allen 2006 etc) or a national environment lifting up people who had no hope at the start of the cycle (see Mark Kirk 2010)

Interesting how the 3 retiring GOP Senators are from states <10% in 2020

This is an interesting observation. Considering Johnson and Grassley could conceivably head for the exits as well, we may see five out of the six Republicans in states Trump lost or won by less than 10 retiring. Does not bode well for Republicans' chances at holding every one of those seats, nor does it inspire confidence in their ability to take back the Senate in '22.

I'd agree with this take if this was a Trump second midterm, given it's a Biden midterm, I see it being more likely that Republicans end up putting CO or something in play than Democrats putting this seat in play.

They'll easily win OH and are solid favorites in WI and NC. PA is the only one that should concern them.

Maybe those 'Trump +<10 state Senators' aren’t actually retiring because they don’t think they can retake the Senate but because they (a) have little desire to serve in the current GOP for another six years and (b) (rightly) think it’s safer to retire in a Republican-leaning midterm year?

This is obviously very likely R and the Republican replacing Portman will be worse.
But is there any chance Tim Ryan will run for this because of his district being unwinnable after redistricting?

It's not like they voted for a Black Man from Chicago with a Muslim sounding middle-name.
