Did Hollande give the order for the joint attack ?

He certainly greenlighted it at some point, but GIGN intervened when they felt it was the best moment to.

The Charlie Hebdo people came out firing; I guess GIGN intervened at the supermarket more or less as soon as they knew to stop the hostage taker there from hearing about it and killing hostages.

A French TV managed to talk to both terrorists on the phone before the assault.

So this brings the death toll of recent events to 17. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

I think the death toll is 20. I sure hope it's the end of it all. It's been challenging.

I don't count the scumbags who did this. They aren't victims.

They are, however, dead. And, however scumbag they are, and so they sure are, they're also human. So, they should be included in the death toll. Hear this for further reference.

I don't mind counting them in the death count.  What I do mind is calling these criminals by the term "militants".  They aren't military, they're thugs.

And Le Pen even wants to re-introduce the death penalty ...

Guess what ? The FPÖ for once is less dickish than the FN:

Sounds like that 18 year old who turned himself in has been released without charge:

Over 3 million people marched throughout France. I was among them in Paris for a couple hours, with my plaster cast and crutches. I had to come.

It was a good day. Nice to see people like Netanyahu and Abbas, Lavrov and Poroshenko marching together, or the flags from all around the world (Turkish flags next to PKK flags, Algerians next to Kabyles, Israeli flags next to Palestinian and Syrians, etc.). Many thanks to everyone in France and abroad who walked today.
There will be a time to talk about consequences of the events of the last days, but we can keep that for tomorrow.

Lol at Bibi and Abbas being all, "No one told me HE was going to be here." I'm sure later in the day at some VIP mixer, they both pretended to text on their phones whenever they walked near each other to avoid having to make eye contact or say hello.

Angela Merkel has the exasperated look of someone who knows half the people she's holding hands with owe her money and she can't bring it up here.

In fct the full trifecta came from Israel - Bibi, Lieberman and Bennett.

I'm surprised nobody from Quebec came.

Moving picture of Hollande and Merkel:

The Canadian government representative was from Quebec and Quebec government was represented by the general delegate in Paris. Nobody of the government could go, because, you know, AUSTERITY.

I wonder if Hollande will get an approval boost ala post-9/11 Bush. I suppose the answer is clearly "yes" since it's impossible for him to drop, but how much?

I know how he meant to say it (that he feared France might be a target at some point), but damn the wording is awful.

It sounds like he wanted the attacks in time for the Hamburg state elections, which are in 1 month.
