I’m amazed at how many people even on supposedly well-informed sites like this actually think Manchin and Sinema are conservatives, and nothing more than attention whores who will toe the party line when needed. Sure, they might make a stink about it, but they haven’t killed anything yet.

Manchin killed Tanden's nomination.

Which was the progressive thing to do.

What do people don't get, we are in a Covid Environment and we are in an evenly split Senate, there was already a power sharing agreement that said D's and Rs must work together just like in 2000, when Daschle and Lott worked together
The Ds aren't gonna be empowered forever and if an R Prez come along they can roll the Ds

D's should be patient until 2022 on Election day to see if we net gain seats

Why are people so upset with Manchin, he is just want to show bipartisanship in a Covid Environment, that's why Feinstein immediately said she was against Crt packing and then Bennett, Kelly and CCM and Hassan joined her

In a Covid Environment, Senators aren't the H, they want to work together, and it's not unnatural

The Ds have a chance to net gain seats in 2022 and can get rid of Filibuster

Believe me, if we were in a typical no. pandemic, Manchin and Senators wouldnt be holding onto Filibuster, and if Covid isn't gone 2023, Senators are still gonna work in the spirit of bipartisanship until Covid is Eradicated

Pretty sure Sanders was against her nomination as well. Manchin just came out in front of it because it allowed him to be against one of Biden's nominee.

We can't know what anybody would have done on the floor but he's the only one who came out against it, so he effectively killed it.

Foolish, even if you ignore the fact that DC residents are not properly represented in congress. Two extra senators would give Manchin and Sinema cover to vote with Republicans on certain issues without derailing the Democratic agenda.

That's why I'm still mad for Gideon and Cunningham not winning. Or Bill Nelson.

Just look a few posts back to see people calling me a doomer for daring to suggest DC statehood wouldn't happen.

The only way we'll get anything significant passed is to abolish the filibuster.  There's no other path.

I know it's counterproductive but I really hope Manchin loses his next election.  I'd be fine losing this seat and even losing the majority just to have him out.

Yea, why didn't anyone claim they lost due to voter fraud?

Republicans would have said this, so why didn't we?  Sure, there's no evidence of it but that doesn't matter anymore.

Of course he doesn't, he already said he was against the Filibuster and DC Statehood doesn't fit into Reconciliation, the Ds are gonna have to win the next Election in order to pass bills like this, not rely dokey on DC Statehood. What happened to Cookie Damage who said that D's were gonna pass DC Statehood without the Filibuster, he contradicted me numerous times

If Gideon, Cunningham, or Nelson won...then there'd be 3 or 4 D Senators blocking this. All meaningful legislation is somehow coincidentally always one vote away

If something ever seems too good to be true, it probably is.

People here were waaay too optimistic about this.

The Ds now can focus on other things aside from Statehood and Crt packing, power grab positions, they can focus on Legislation now

Manchin's position is a bit ironic, considering West Virginia's legal admission as a state is somewhat debatable.

In fact, Justice Barrett doesn't even believe it's a legitimate state.

I can't imagine there will be a vote now.   Hopefully in 2023 if Dems gain Senate seats.

In fact, Justice Barrett doesn't even believe it's a legitimate state.

Now there is a new Democratic Party priority: get a lawsuit in front of the USSC challenging West Virginia's statehood. Unpack the union, as they say.

Hopefully those brilliant and fair conservative justices only adhere to the text of the constitution and not engage in vicious librul-style judicial activism.

It would be good if people read the article instead of just the headline.

Manchin's reason for opposing it is that he doesn't think legislation is a constitutional solution, not because he wants to vote no, unless I missed it. That leaves the door open to Schumer and others making the case that it is, likely with hearings. This is potentially laying the path for him to change his mind later.

Yes, he's clearly left himself an out with careful wording here. Let's not jump off any bridges just yet. We knew he would go through this song and dance.

For example, he cites AG opinions from the JFK administration about constitutionality. That leaves the door open for Garland to make a case.
