Uh, plenty of Nazis obviously weren't in perfect mental shape, including Hitler. Doesn't mean they should've gotten away.

Right, because as we all know, Hess was a duplicate of Hitler. That he willingly gave himself up made not a difference to the Soviets, nor the British.
