Yes, especially without the benefit of hindsight. Remember, they'd be fighting a power that was defeated and then went to pot a mere 20 years previously.

America joining up in '39 would be like sending mass ground troops to Iraq today to fight ISIS x100.

ISIS couldn't ever reach a fourth of the strength the Axis Powers had.
