so much for it being a "left-wing circle jerk"

I'm sure there are more than a few left-wingers who would prefer a pro-Western foreign policy for West Germany at this point in time, especially given that frikkin' Stalin is still alive and kicking.

EDIT: In particular, there's a very very strong case that said pro-Western foreign policy, especially when contrasted with the reunification and/or irredentist goals of the left and far-right, is really the only responsible stance to take w/r/t world peace and preventing WWIII.

Pretty sure a neutral Germany would have meant far less tension in Europe.

A neutral, unified Germany, perhaps.  A neutral West Germany and a Soviet GDR (and let's not kid ourselves, that's what would happen here), um not so much.
Adenauer, however, would certainly seal off any hope of reunification (and let's not forget that Khruschev comes to power not too long from now)

Who is still a dictator even if his bodycount was a few order of magnitudes smaller than Stalin's. A pro-Western Germany also enabled stronger European integration and ensued an European community that was not dominated by France.
