Well water for both private and municipal systems is normal around here in northern IL. Once one is outside of the Lake Michigan basin which has strict water regulations, shallow and deep aquifers are the most reliable source of water. Municipal systems tap into both shallow and deep bedrock aquifers, while private wells that serve single homes use more shallow groundwater.

Is this literally water from a well?

Do people even still do this?

That was my reaction. When did Atlas become supermajority rural?

There are lots suburban homes on small private wells in my area. In the NE my in-laws use water from their private well in suburban Boston. For municipal systems wells are also a common source in many parts of the US. A great deal of bottled water is actually well water when it doesn't explicitly say spring water.
