One of those Democrats who always seemed to have a fairly large following here for reasons I don't quite understand - particularly given his support for the Vietnam War and overall hawkish foreign policy philosophy that directly influenced Bush-era neocons like Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle.

Strong HP for that reason.

Massive FF, if he had won in 1976 instead of a do-nothing like Carter it's possible we would have gotten healthcare and no Reagan.

Strange. The inflation rate was still quite high and there was an emerging consensus that government spending (and money printing by the Federal Reserve/an overly accommodative monetary policy) was the cause of the persistent high inflation, Jackson doubled down on both a high spending domestic and foreign policy (I recognize of course this was post Vietnam, in terms of foreign policy spending.)

Had he been elected President in 1976 of course his success would have depended on the fate of the Shah of Iran and whether there would have been an oil embargo, but if yes, I suspect the situation would have been so much worse than Carter that Teddy Kennedy would have defeated Jackson in 1980.

For which wars did Fetterman support sending young American men to die in needlessly?

There aren't any such wars, certainly not on the same scale. However, Fetterman is taking a position on the biggest foreign policy issue of the day that is at odds with the activist left, which is comparable to Jackson, as are his firmly left-wing views (by U.S. Senate standards) on most domestic matters.

Calling someone "the Senator from Boeing" now would carry... some different connotations.

My views have shifted since the days of my teenage fandom. That said, I still maintain some sentimental appreciation of what the man represented.

'Social democratic politician who was also a massive hardliner on Cold War issues' was a familiar enough type of politician here to be an archetype.

None, I was just thinking that was the closest comparison.  Both economic progressives from swing states who had controversial foreign policy views.

This one is difficult. Domestically, more of an FF, especially on labor, energy (pro-nuclear energy), and healthcare. On foreign policy, his hawkishness during Vietnam and opposition to SALT II fall into HP territory. But even on foreign policy, the record is mixed. For example, he deserves praise for his legislative efforts to help Jews get out of the oppressive USSR. I prefer his 1976 campaign to his 1972 campaign fwiw.

He was a hawk on Vietnam, but he was a believer in Peace through Strength.

He was a strong anti-Communist, but he was a fervent opponent of apartheid in the 1970s, and an advocate for an independent Namibia.

Dr. Jean Herskovits was one of the leading scholars on Africa, and one of my professors in college.  I remember her pointing out one day that Henry Jackson, despite his Vietnam stance, was actually quite liberal on self-determination for Africa and African issues.  The same was true of another liberal Democratic hawk, Sen. Gale McGee (D-WY).

Jackson was an FF on balance.

Meh, FF on balance, but far from my first choice for either 1972 or 1976.

Firm FF on balance, on account of both his domestic labour liberalism and anti communist foreign policy. Scoop Jackson would have been a better President than any actual occupant of the Oval Office between 1969 and 1983. I don't think it's fair to see neoconservatives as his true ideological heirs despite certain connections in personnel etc.-modern-day neoconservatism largely abandoned any trace of Jackson's New Deal liberalism.
