JFK was the proto-Reagan when it came to economic policy and taxes, and a proto-Dubya when it came to getting the U.S. involved in unnecessary foreign wars of aggression we had no business being in. I would definitely argue that John Kennedy was to the right of his Republican predecessor Dwight Eisenhower. HP

Too bad his opponent in 1960 was just as much of an HP.

Also funny how the same people who call me a "degenerate" as a single 20-something gay guy in NYC praise a married man with children notorious for sleeping around and who claimed to get "headaches" if he didn't have different women around to constantly service him sexually.

FF (R), because he loved America and wasn't afraid to go against the Democrat leadership on many issues, including taxes and (to some extent) civil rights.

Kennedy knew that Southern Whites were never especially comfortable with him and going publicly aggressive on the issue would have had serious political repercussions. Pre-Civil Rights Act, no Democrat could win an election without sweeping the South. So, while not ideal, I completely understand his position.
I get where you're coming from. Still, I think that the president has a moral obligation to act on issues such as this, even at the expense of his (or her) political future. Keep in mind that Harry Truman (the president, not me) faced a similar situation in terms of civil rights--dependence on the South, a challenge from a liberal New York Republican--but took action anyways because it was the right thing to do (and won reelection to boot). I don't discount the difficult choices Kennedy faced, and completely understand that there was only so much he could practically expect to achieve, but I still think he could have done more. That is why we elect presidents, after all: to make tough decisions, not hide from them.

Stop being jealous.

Mild FF overall-while his handling of the CMC itself is certainly praiseworthy, the crisis started due to JFK's perceived inexperience.

A pretty-faced do-nothing. Seriously, JFK did nothing on civil rights until he was absolutely forced to, got us into Vietnam, and accomplished almost nothing of note. Why he is so revered by the American public is beyond me.

You're thinking of LBJ there, buck rodgers.
LBJ at least made significant progress on Civil Rights. Say what you will about Vietnam, the Voting Rights Act was a heck on an accomplishment, and I happen to support Medicaid.

Right, because Vietnam was such a small minor detail of his presidency. JFK may have not started out passionate about the issue, but towards the end of his life he truly believed in the cause, and would have fought for it even further had he not been killed. And let's not forget that JFK also fought for Healthcare for seniors. Combine this with the fact that LBJ was personally said to be extremely racist. Yeaaaaah...

The best thing about JFK was that he learnt mistrust the CIA, after he was tricked into the stupid Bay of Pigs invasion. Him using that - to his credit - to develop a healthy dislike of the intelligence agencies and their tomfoolery that his predecessor and successor lacked. His actions in the Cuban Missile Crisis were also fairly sensible, I give him credit for avoiding nuclear war. That's always a positive.

Was he a nice person? Well, no, very few Presidents are. JFK was morally dubious, and his heavy use of spin vs. his actual actions means his reputation has suffered from people who think it's super clever to be "cynical" of popular people.

He supported the South Vietnamese Government at first, but he started to regret supporting a corrupt and unpopular regime and wanted to pull out. Which may have been the reason he was killed(I know I just put on my tin foil hat but it's one of the less insane theories I've heard).
