Robert C Byrd who was there as Dem Maj Leader during 70's under Carter and there as Appropriations Ranking Dem under Clinton kept WVa as a Dem state. When Gore and Kerry were nominated, Byrd torch wasnt passed to anymore Dems until Manchin, who is a blue dog. Since then, NH and Iowa and NM has replaced WVa as Dem strongholds. NH was more conservative when WVa was a blue dog state, under Sununus.

IIRC, a news anchor said on Election Night 2000 that Gore couldn't win the election if he couldn't win West Virginia.

The Nadar vote cost Gore NH, if he picked Bob Graham, FL would have went into recount and Graham would have helped in NH.

It's somewhat strange that those states would be called the Goldwater west when Goldwater won only 1 of those 5 states.

It's also strange that anyone would consider Florida part of the West.

McCain coined it back in 08 as the Goldwater West. As McCain, Goldwater and the Cactus Corrider, including New Mexico, who supported Gary Johnson has moderate Republican roots. In 1968, Nixon swept all of them, since he ran against HHH, instead of RFK. In which NM and NJ would have put Dems in WH.

2008 & 2012 were realigning elections, I think 2016, since terrorism changed the tenor of the election, it will return to form and 2000 & 2004 election will be norm for time being.  In which SW, and Rust belt without Appalachia will be owned by Clinton.

It was always a Dixiecrat state, but Robert C Byrd kept it in the Democratic column, and so did Jay Rockefeller.  It voted for Carter, LBJ, JFK, Truman & Clinton. It became a GOP, after Byrd.

Tom Harkin won multiple elections there and he was the second most liberal Senator to Sherrod Brown. Gore did carry Iowa. And Culver & Tom Vilsak were elected govs.

Iowa is a purple, not red state.
