Those look odd to say the least. Are they phasing out the old coins then? When do these come into circulation?

This summer. The old coins will remain in circulation.

For the record here's what's on the coins at present:

1p - a portcullis representing parliament
2p - three feathers (a royal symbol of Wales)
5p - a thistle (Scotland)
10p - a lion
20p - a rose (England)
50p - Britannia
£1 - Various designs

There is also a £2 coin. Both 50p coins and £2 coins are used as templates for commemorative coins, so what's on them can change. The £1 coin goes though a rotation of different symbols representing the UK and the home nations, national flowers, landmark bridges etc.
